Scary mouse adopters

28 03 2014

I had two surreal phonecalls yesterday.

Guy: Err.. yeah.. er.. I’m calling about the mice?

Me: Great!

Guy: Err, how many do you have? I want to feed them to snakes.

Me: Well, I’m looking for them to be adopted, not killed: so, sorry, you can’t have them.

Guy: Err… Ok. Bye.

2 minutes later, *ring ring*, another phonecall … from the same number.

Girl: Hi, I’m calling about the mice?

Me: You just called from this number! You can’t feed them to snakes!

Girl: Oh, that was my boyfriend. He wants to feed them to his snakes, but me, I want them alive.

Me (thinking, no way): OK… then give me your email and I’ll send you the University’s adoption form.

Girl: Sure – it’s “bieber_fever 101@….”

Yeah, she is so not getting those mice.

February’s fur auction results

26 03 2014

A warm winter in Russia and China (much of mainland Eurasia’s had a winter as oddly warm as the UK’s has been wet and our’s brutally cold) was amongst factors preventing fabulous prices at the NAFA auctions (see e.g. this for wild furs, and this for prices before Christmas). However, the farmers seem philosophical rather than blue: they know that the crazy highs of the last few years were never going to last.

MFA show and Shenkman Lecture

26 03 2014

The Shenkman lecture on visual arts and the Masters of Fine Arts annual “Open Studios” show are a highlight of the Guelph year for me, but this year I had to pick just one (it was the day before killing the first C57s and I was busy and anxious), so chose the show.

I loved some photographs by Maryanne Casasanta, paintings by Rachel Crummey and wierd scupltures by Stephanie Cormier, but felt a little dowdy amongst all those hipsters, and self-conscious about the large polysterene ice box full of sample tubes I was lugging about ready for tomorrow…. (Hipster 24: Hey what’s the box? Me: Science stuff. H24: What’s it for? Me: I really really don’t want to tell you).
