Europe v North America

18 03 2014

Just asked Jake about the dreadful line “a synthesizing of evidence-based North American zoo approaches with European modes of thought, which has looked at animal welfare from a more holistic, less evidence-dependent perspective” (my exact phrasing being “where the **** did THAT come from?”), and here is what he said (way more reasonable of course):

“Yes, not an exact synthesis of what I said; was making the point that the US zoos focus on vet care as the primary welfare benchmark because it’s measurable, whereas in Europe we focus more on elements of pyschological wellbeing that may not ever be truly provable”.

OK: that, I can live with.
