Too many Canadian cats

9 05 2014

Yesterday Shane Bateman from the Guelph Humane Society came to talk to the ABW group about the Guelph ‘Cat Task Force‘.

I first saw him speak 18 months ago, when he referred to the vast local feral and stray cat population at a conference the very day Jamie found Sylvie. Since then all the various local shelters (even ones whose despise GHS because they won’t adopt a ‘no kill’ policy) and other interested parties have joined forces to tackle the two problems outlined here: about 600 000 homeless cats who’ve been socialized and would probably like to be pets, but can’t find homes, and an uncounted but BIG population of true ferals who don’t like people, but do like snacking on songbirds and other wildlife.

Interesting stuff. Made me want to take on a few more cats, though even our 4 feels like too many sometimes…
