‘Fellatio in bears’ paper published

18 06 2014

Still can’t believe I didn’t referee it (but the sample size is so small, and all my usual grumbles about Zoo Biology; a study of fellatio in 20 bears, now that I would have refereed).

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/zoo.21137/abstract. Seems to be getting a lot of online attention.

Spontaneous altern

18 06 2014

I’ve had so many crazy/urgent emails from this guy allegedly about this paper, that I finally googled on a hunch and found that ‘MinK’ actually is a peptide. He must be thrilled at what we can get MinK to do (learn tasks for treats; bite savagely; look cute, glam and vicious all at the same time, etc.)

Do crayfish feel anxious?

15 06 2014

Like last year’s work on crabs possibly feeling pain, here’s another study that’s consistent with crustacea having affective states yet not quite proof. Looking forward to Walter‘s work hitting the news when it finally comes out….

Click here for the BBC story, and here for the Science paper.

World cup!

15 06 2014

It’s that time again, when work has to be juggled with watching England lose to a variety of other countries (Maria and Walter had to endure Spain’s miserable loss to the NL last week too). I do love the World Cup, despite this, and despite obnoxiousness of FIFA…

California trip

13 06 2014

Just back from a wonderful whirlwind trip to California (well it would have been whirlwind if the temperature has not been a staggering 100 degrees F, which meant I spent a lot of time trying not to move).  I spent Sunday just south of San Francisco, visiting Joe Garner, his wife Megan and their two very small children in their steep little hillside house with its sea view. Fun to catch up with his life and work; I was also very impressed at the $4000 3-D printer he keeps in his loo. Monday and Tuesday were spent in Davis, where I gave a seminar on all our mink enrichment work (8 years in 50 minutes!); met up with Joy Mench (squeezed in a spot of shoe-shopping with her too: heaven), Cheryl Meehan and Brian Greco to discuss updates on the IMLS elephant project; had a lovely 3-hour long work lunch (well kind of work) with the World Parrot Trust’s Jamie Gilardi; and ate delicious Japanese food with Andy Sih and his lovely wife Cait.
