Just a normal useless girl

Screen Shot 2014-10-11 at 5.42.57 PMThe Nobel Peace Prize winners seemed particularly heartening this year: a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, both campaigning for children’s welfare in different ways.

I first heard the news on the Beeb yesterday, in an extraordinary News Hour interview with a senior Pakistani figure who first claimed that Malala Yousafzai’s shooting had been faked, and then sorted of blurted out that she was just “a normal, useless type of girl“. “Whoa, someone needs media training!” was my first thought (I lie: that was my second thought; my first thought is unprintable)…. oh, except he’d been an editor of the Pakistan Observer!

Malala lives in Birmingham now (poor thing). Apparently when she first arrived, she found other women’s clothing so skimpy, she thought there was a national fabric shortage. This is a great piece about her. Let’s hope she makes friends, thrives in her last year or two at school, and that her next step is her heart’s desire.
