Animal welfare, country by country

World Animal Protection has just released its global ‘Animal Welfare Index‘: a ranking of countries according to how they treat animals and legislate to protect them.

Austria, Switzerland and the UK lead, though I’m surprised they’re ahead of Sweden and the Netherlands. Canada seems no better than the US, perhaps because of its weak legal framework (lots of codes, no teeth); and Australia is surprisingly no better than Spain (perhaps Spain is pulled up by being in Europe?). Norway and Finland are strangely blank (expected for countries like Chad or Mongolia, but weird for these well-regulated nations with lively groups of welfare scientists). And Iran and Belarus are apparently no place to be an animal…
