Problems in business-run welfare assurance schemes

In North America it’s economics and business decisions, not federal policy, that are the key drivers of animal welfare standards. Particular companies decide to adhere to standards that are above the law, and they then need good inspection regimes and reliable, ‘auditable’ supply chains if their policies are to truly turn into good practice.
