How autotelic are you?

Our journal club this year has switched to a book: Daniel Nettle’s beautifully written and rather funny “Happiness”.img_8953

One of the first things we learnt was about the various levels of things called happiness, from momentary positive affect, through to the more cognitive “Has your life been a good one so far?”, through to almost moral judgments about whether your life is worthwhile.

Into this last category falls the concept of being “autotelic“: calmly self-sufficient and centred, engaged yet also independent, with little need for external reward. Personally, I feel I’m pretty autotelic actually … just as long as I get enough praise, and can regularly indulge my penchant for internet shopping.
