The calm before the storm

13 02 2017

This is the Nova Scotia hotel room of new-ish post-doc Lauren Dawson (who did an MSc with me years ago). She has just arrived, and has just unpacked her brand new “table cloth poster” — all ready to set up stall at the first of two mink farmers’ meetings, one here, and then one in Newfoundland a few days hence. Little does she know what’s ahead of her…

During the intense next few days Lauren’s going to hear that enrichments are the best things in the world, and that they are the worst things in the world; she’s going to stay up drinking until 5am; and (I picture to rounds of applause) she will be awarded a “screeched in” certificate, for kissing a cod.
